ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a compelled, impelled and propelled printmaker and musician.
I often make work about experiences in meditation, about the ineffable; a realm that often escapes words. The work’s touchstone is about what arises when the mind is empty and notions of self have vanished. The central theme stems from a recognition of the oneness of existence devoid of mental constructs and divisions.
I sit in meditation. After emerging, the reverie is extended by listening to hypnotic or repetitive music. It is in this situational floating that an absence of ego is felt. It is in this place that the work is designed. It is in this flow, that carving and etching is done. It is in this state that I ink and print. Repetition is my material.
There is a compulsion to create because it feels like an appropriate way of describing oneness. There is a longing to communicate what feels like a profound understanding. There is a longing for connection. There is a longing for oneness. Printmaking mimics the repetitive nature of a meditation practice. My prints, in particular, reflect both the process of printmaking as well as the rigours of diving deep into self. It is an important element of the work that the process and the result are married, merged, and converged.
